Four manuscript documents in Spanish relating to an 1864 cattle theft case (Territorio de Nuevo Mexico v. José Chávez y Gutiérrez) in Bernalillo County in the Territory of New Mexico. Papers consist of: a report made by José Sánchez, dated 1864 Mar 4 and signed by the court clerk, recording the theft of three cattle and one animal belonging to an unidentified party; formal complaint by José Sánchez, dated 1864 Mar 4 and signed by Sánchez and the court clerk, adding additional details about the theft and citing the legal statute in violation; a clerk copy of a document dated 1864 Mar 4, ordering Mariano Armijo to post a 100 peso bond for his own appearance in court for the trial of Chávez y Gutiérrez, signed and sealed in the name of Judge Ambrocio Armijo, witnessed by Mariano Armijo, and guaranteed by José Maria Sánchez and Manuel Sánchez; and a document, dated 1864 Apr 30 and signed by the court clerk, reporting that the Sánchez's stolen animals were found in the possession of Mariano Armijo, who had purchased them from José Chávez y Gutiérrez. The last document orders the incarceration of Chávez y Gutiérrez and the appearance of Mariano Armijo as a witness in court. One printed form in English, completed in manuscript and dated 1866 May 5, summons José Maria Sánchez, Manuel Sánchez, Antonio Cortinas, Teodoro Armijo and Nestor Garcia to appear before the United States District Court for the Second Judicial District in the Territory of New Mexico, as witnesses for the defense in the Territory's case against Mariano Armijo. No charge is specified against Armijo. A manuscript note on the verso, signed by Deputy Marshall Z. A. Hill on May 7, 1866, records that the summons was delivered to three of the five men listed.
